Jonah ibn Janah

Spanish rabbi and lexicographer

c. 990 – c. 1050aged 60

An 11th-century rabbi and physician in Muslim Spain whose Kitab al-Tanqih combined the first complete grammar of Hebrew with a dictionary of Biblical Hebrew, a work later scholars called the most influential Hebrew grammar for centuries and one still cited by grammarians across Europe and the Middle East. He also wrote Kitab al-Talkhis, considered the oldest surviving monograph on the naming of simple medicinal drugs, work that engaged him in unresolved scholarly disputes with his contemporary Samuel ibn Naghrillah.
