Josef Breuer

Austrian physician

1842 – 1925aged 83

An Austrian physician whose treatment of a patient known as Anna O. in the 1880s produced the "cathartic method" — having a patient talk through the origin of a symptom until it eased — the technique that became the seed of psychoanalysis. He developed the method and shared it with his younger friend and collaborator Sigmund Freud, who built on it to found a discipline that would reshape twentieth-century thought about the mind, even as the two later fell out over its direction.
