Leonard Bloomfield
American linguist
1887 – 1949aged 62
Leonard Bloomfield led the development of structural linguistics in the United States, and his 1933 textbook Language became the field's defining statement of that approach for a generation, earning him recognition as the father of American distributionalism. He worked across an unusually wide range, from Indo-European historical linguistics to the description of Austronesian and Algonquian languages, insisting throughout that linguistics be built on rigorous, formal analysis of data rather than intuition.
