American physicist
b. c. 1940Living
A theoretical physicist regarded as one of the founders of string theory, who in 1995 gave the first precise string-theoretic account of the holographic principle — the idea that all the information in a volume of space can be encoded on its boundary — and in 2003 introduced the string theory landscape, a framework for the vast number of possible universes the theory allows. A professor at Stanford, he has also become known for making advanced physics accessible to general audiences through popular books and lectures.
