Lucy Shapiro
American developmental biologist
b. 1940age 86Living
Shapiro founded a new field within developmental biology by using bacteria to study how a single cell organizes itself in time and space — showing that the bacterial cell runs an integrated genetic circuit that functions like a systems-engineering blueprint for differentiation. That work reshaped the understanding of bacterial genetic networks broadly enough to open new avenues for fighting antibiotic-resistant infections, earning her the National Medal of Science.
