Marek Edelman

Jewish resistance member

1922 – 2009aged 87

A co-founder of the Jewish Combat Organization who became the last surviving leader of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising after commander Mordechaj Anielewicz was killed, and who went on to fight again in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the Nazi occupation. After the war he remained in Poland and trained as a cardiologist, later joining the Solidarity movement and taking part in the 1989 Round Table Talks that helped end communist rule — a life that ran from armed resistance to democratic politics without a pause in between.
