Discovered G-proteins, the molecular switches that let a cell relay signals from hormones and other messengers arriving at its surface into changes inside the cell — a mechanism now understood to underlie processes from vision to how many drugs act on the body. He shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Alfred G. Gilman for the discovery.
