Marvin Minsky

Co-founded the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and spent fifty years arguing that the mind is a machine and could therefore be built. His book with Seymour Papert on perceptrons was rigorous enough to help stall neural network research for a decade — an object lesson in how a correct proof about one model can be read as a verdict on a whole approach.
