Gave quantum mechanics its meaning as well as its mathematics: the wavefunction, he showed, is not a thing but a probability. Driven out of Göttingen in 1933, he rebuilt his career in Edinburgh. Nobel Prize in Physics, 1954 — nearly three decades after the work it recognised.
