Melvin Schwartz

American experimental physicist

1932 – 2006aged 73

Schwartz shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics with Leon Lederman and Jack Steinberger for developing the neutrino beam method, an experimental technique that let physicists fire a controlled stream of neutrinos at a target rather than wait for them to occur naturally. Using it, the three discovered the muon neutrino, showing that neutrinos come in more than one type — a finding that helped establish the structure of the particles now called leptons.
