Paul Ehrenfest

Austrian and Dutch theoretical physicist

1880 – 1933aged 53

A theoretical physicist whose work on statistical mechanics and phase transitions — the Ehrenfest theorem among it — helped bridge classical and quantum physics, and whose Leiden home became a regular stop for his close friend Albert Einstein. Struggling with depression late in life, he killed his disabled son and himself in 1933, a tragedy that closed a career built on real scientific insight.
