Paul Halmos
American mathematician
1916 – 2006aged 90
Paul Halmos made fundamental contributions across mathematical logic, probability theory, operator theory, and functional analysis, with particularly lasting work on Hilbert spaces, but his broader legacy may be as a teacher of mathematics to other mathematicians — he was widely regarded as one of the great expositors of his field, admired for making difficult ideas legible rather than merely proving them. Hungarian-born, he was counted among "The Martians," the informal group of émigré scientists whose influence on American science outran their small numbers.
