Robert Hofstadter
American physicist and Nobel laureate
1915 – 1990aged 75
Won the 1961 Nobel Prize in Physics for firing electrons at atomic nuclei and reading the scattering patterns to map what was inside — the first real look at the structure of protons and neutrons rather than treating them as points. The technique became a standard tool of nuclear physics; Hofstadter shared the prize with Rudolf Mössbauer for work that, together, established how much detail the nucleus actually has.
