Left Moscow at six when his family fled Soviet antisemitism — his father had been barred from doctoral study in physics by quotas on Jews. Fifteen years later, as a graduate student at Stanford, he and Larry Page worked out that the link structure of the web could rank it, and built Google around the idea.
