Tullio Levi-Civita

Italian mathematician and physicist

1873 – 1941aged 68

An Italian mathematician whose work on tensor calculus, developed with his teacher Gregorio Ricci-Curbastro, gave Einstein the mathematical language he needed for general relativity. Einstein himself corresponded with Levi-Civita and drew directly on absolute differential calculus to formulate the theory. He also made lasting contributions to celestial mechanics, including the three-body problem, and to hydrodynamics, working productively across both pure and applied mathematics.
