1868 – 1937aged 69
The Balfour Declaration, Britain's 1917 pledge of support for a Jewish national home in Palestine, was formally addressed to Rothschild as the country's most prominent Zionist leader, placing a British aristocrat's name permanently inside one of Zionism's founding documents. Beyond politics, Rothschild was a serious zoologist, and he later served as president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews from 1925 to 1926.
