b. 1964age 62Living

One of three researchers who shared the 2018 Turing Award for the deep learning methods that now underpin most of artificial intelligence, developed largely while the field considered neural networks a dead end. Built much of the theoretical groundwork at the University of Montreal, where he still directs Mila, one of the world's largest academic AI labs. Increasingly the field's most prominent internal voice for taking the risks of the technology he helped build seriously. Born in France to a Jewish family that had emigrated from Morocco.
