Zellig Harris
populariser of theoretical linguistics
1909 – 1992aged 82
Zellig Harris spent the first decade of his career establishing structural linguistics and discourse analysis, then discovered the transformational structure in language that would later be developed, under a different name, by his student Noam Chomsky. Over the following three and a half decades he kept building formal frameworks for describing language — transfer grammar, operator grammar, sublanguage grammar — work that shaped how linguistics became a mathematical discipline.
