César Milstein

Argentine biochemist

1927 – 2002aged 74

An Argentine biochemist who developed the hybridoma technique, fusing antibody-producing cells with cancer cells to create lines that churn out a single, precisely targeted antibody indefinitely. Monoclonal antibodies made from that method became a backbone of modern medicine and research — used in everything from pregnancy tests to cancer treatments — and Milstein shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Georges Köhler and Niels Jerne for the discovery.
