Denied graduate funding because labs would not take a woman, she worked as a food-quality tester and studied at night. Went on to design drugs for leukaemia, gout, malaria and herpes, plus the immunosuppressant that made organ transplants survivable, winning the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine without ever holding a doctorate.
