Oliver Sacks
British neurologist and writer
1933 – 2015aged 82
A London-born neurologist who turned clinical case studies into literature, giving full attention to patients most doctors filed away as merely unusual. His 1973 book Awakenings recounted rousing patients who had been frozen for decades by a 1920s sleeping-sickness epidemic, using the drug L-DOPA, and became an Academy Award-nominated film starring Robin Williams. He spent decades writing about the mind's stranger workings in prose the New York Times called that of "one of the great clinical writers of the 20th century." Journals released after his death showed he sometimes embellished his accounts, a wrinkle in an otherwise widely admired body of work.
