Paul Ehrlich

1854 – 1915aged 61

Invented chemotherapy and the idea behind it: that a compound could be designed to bind a pathogen and leave the patient alone — his "magic bullet". Compound 606, Salvarsan, was the first effective treatment for syphilis and the first drug rationally designed rather than found. Nobel Prize in Medicine, 1908.
