Robert Bárány
Austri-Hungarian otologist and Nobel Prize laureate
1876 – 1936aged 59
An Austrian-born otologist whose research on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular apparatus — the inner ear's balance system — won him the 1914 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. It remains one of medicine's more unusual honors: a prize for working out, in exact physiological terms, why disease or injury to that small organ leaves people dizzy and unable to stand steady.
