Robert Lefkowitz spent his career working out how cells receive signals from hormones and drugs, mapping the structure and mechanics of G protein-coupled receptors — a class of proteins that roughly a third of all prescription medicines now target. He shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with his former student Brian Kobilka for the work, most of it done at Duke, where he still teaches.
