Selman Waksman
1888 – 1973aged 85
A soil microbiologist who reasoned that if bacteria are everywhere and the world is not made of bacteria, something in the dirt must be killing them. His lab found streptomycin, the first cure for tuberculosis, and he coined the word antibiotic. Nobel Prize in Medicine, 1952.
