Invented psychoanalysis and, with it, the modern habit of looking for hidden motives beneath ordinary behaviour. Much of the specific theory has not survived scrutiny; the framing — unconscious drives, childhood's long shadow, the therapeutic conversation — reshaped how the West talks about itself.
